| Project Title: | Development of LPS defective gene knock-out mutant of Brucella abortus and the evaluation of its virulence and antigenic potential as vaccine candidate |
| Abstract of Project : | |
| Brucellosis is a major bacterial zoonosis caused by members of the genus, Brucella. At present, the vaccine strain in use in many parts of the world, including India, is the smooth attenuated strain B. abortus S19 that gives considerable protection to vaccinated cattle. However, it has major drawbacks including abortion in pregnant animals, its being pathogenic to humans and the difficulty in serologically distinguishing vaccinated from infected animals. The objective of my Fulbright-Nehru project is to develop a genetically modified strain of the S19 strain with reduced virulence. I hope the modified strain will circumvent the demerits of existing vaccine strain including its interference with the sero-diagnosis of the disease. | |
